Project Overview
Northern Nigeria is home to a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions, yet many tribes remain under-represented in mainstream narratives. Mindscapes of Arewa: Tribes Beyond the Spotlight documents and celebrates that heritage through photography and short video — amplifying voices and preserving traditions for future generations.
Through immersive field visits and community engagement, the project focuses on festivals, crafts, traditional stories, and daily life among under-represented communities across the region.
Still North
The work grows into Still North, a photo exhibition that moves beyond stereotypes and reductive headlines to engage with lived realities and rituals. It speaks to resilience — communities that remain present, vibrant, and expressive — and to stillness: a contemplative space where dignity and identity are preserved through presence rather than noise.
The exhibition re-centers these tribes not at the edges of Arewa but at its core, where memory, ritual, and survival intersect — affirming that the North is not only a place but a pulse: still, enduring, and alive.
Why It Matters
- Brings visibility to overlooked tribes and cultural practices.
- Documents and preserves traditions, rituals, and everyday life.
- Challenges limited perceptions of Northern Nigeria.
- Creates space for reflection, recognition, and dialogue around belonging.
